It's a gourmet lunch. It's a party. It's a celebration of learning valuable culinary skills. It's BISTRO!
The Culinary School BISTRO! is held every other Thursday at 1 p.m. while classes are in session. Check the Events section of this website for dates of upcoming BISTRO!s.
Preparations for BISTRO! begin many days in advance as students learn culinary skills through preparing foods that will be served at BISTRO! In making everything from simple salads to complex sauces, students learn how to cook, how to present food appealing to the eye, how to make the most of the available food ingredients, how to organize a big event, how to work as a team.
At midmorning of the day of a BISTRO!, there's a high level of excitement in the air as the last Friendship Trays meals are completed.
Students quickly roll away to storage the food prep carts and other equipment used to prepare Friendship Trays. They clean the entire kitchen, then reorganize it for one huge buffet. Food prepared earlier comes out, tables are prepared for guests, then it's BISTRO! time.
The crowd is welcomed by Chef Ron or another staff member. Students are then introduced and the students explain what they are serving and a bit about how it was prepared.
Then the line forms, guests are served, and the eating begins all over the kitchen and adjoining rooms of the Friendship Trays building at 2401-A Distribution Street in South End, Charlotte.
BISTRO! is free to guests, but donations are collected to support the Culinary School's operations.
